Traditional mandau knife of the Dayak people from Borneo. Associated with the headhunting ceremony. Steel blade is set with animal bone carved hilt and animal hair. The wooden scabbard is beautifully carved with high attention to detail and bound with natural fibre woven ropes. Antique, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Acquired by a British officer stationed in Singapore in the 1950s.
Size: the knife 65 cm long, 9 cm wide at the hilt; the blade 51.5 cm x 3.6 cm; the scabbard 54 x 5.2 cm
Condition: general age related wear, the scabbard is worn, the weaving is brittle, the blade is pitted
