A rare boatswain's starter or persuader cosh. The rod is made out of a twisted bunch of baleen or whale teeth, set on each end with a lead finial. Antique British, dating from the early 19th century. These were also used by press gangs on land, when impressing men into the Navy service by force.

Size: 29 cm long, 3 cm diameter, the shaft is 1.3 cm diameter

Condition: some splits and surface wear to the baleen shaft
